Every boating accident is tragic, but sometimes two accidents occurring within days of one another reveal an important pattern that every boater should understand.

During the past two weeks, two separate fatal boating accidents occurred on New Jersey's Barnegat Bay involving vessels that struck channel markers at night. In the first tragedy, two young children lost their lives after the boat they were riding aboard collided with a navigational marker. Less than a week later, another nighttime collision with a channel marker claimed the life of a young adult and seriously injured several others. Even for this busy area of the Jersey Shore, these two accidents are alarming.

The official investigations remain ongoing, and it is important not to speculate about the precise causes of either accident. However, these tragedies, and many similar ones nationwide, provide an opportunity for all boaters to learn an important lesson.

The uncomfortable truth is that boats striking fixed objects—especially channel markers, docks, seawalls, bridges, and jetties—remain one of the leading causes of serious boating accidents throughout the United States.

The question is simple: How does a boat hit something that isn't moving?

The Most Common Cause: Operator Inattention

After reviewing countless recreational boating accidents over the years, one contributing factor appears repeatedly: the operator simply wasn't maintaining a proper lookout.

The Navigation Rules require every vessel to maintain a proper lookout by sight and hearing at all times. That responsibility doesn't disappear simply because the weather is clear or the operator is familiar with the waterway.

A proper lookout means continuously scanning ahead, to both sides, and behind while also monitoring surrounding traffic, navigation aids, weather, wakes, and changing conditions.Many operators believe that because they're "looking forward," they're maintaining a lookout.

Those are not necessarily the same thing. Modern boats are filled with distractions:

  • Fish Finders
  • Radar Displays
  • Cell Phones
  • Unsecured items
  • Conversations with passengers
  • Children moving around the boat
  • Food and drinks
  • Taking photos or videos

Speed Multiplies Every Mistake

Unlike driving on a highway, there are often no posted speed limits on open waterways.
That doesn't mean every speed is safe.

Federal Navigation Rule 6 requires every operator to proceed at a safe speed so they can take proper and effective action to avoid a collision. Notice the wording.

The rule doesn't define a specific number. Instead, it requires operators to consider:

  • Visibility
  • Traffic density
  • Wind
  • Sea state
  • Current
  • Background lighting
  • Vessel maneuverability
  • Stopping distance

At night, your safe speed is almost always lower than it is during daylight.
If you cannot stop or maneuver within the distance you can clearly identify hazards ahead, you are likely traveling too fast for the conditions.

Why Night Boating Changes Everthing

Many experienced boaters become comfortable running familiar waterways after dark.
That confidence can sometimes create unnecessary risk.

Night boating dramatically changes depth perception, distance judgment, and reaction time. Objects that are obvious during daylight become much harder to recognize. Even though channel markers are equipped with reflective material or lights, they can blend into background shoreline lighting, nearby homes, docks, businesses, or other navigation lights.

The farther ahead you detect a hazard, the more options you have. When detection occurs too late, your only remaining options are hard turns, abrupt throttle reductions, or impact.

Technology Is a Tool—Not a Substitute

Today's recreational boats often include sophisticated electronics:

  • GPS chartplotters
  • Radar
  • FLIR
  • AIS
  • Sonar
  • Digital Charts
  • Autopilot systems

These are outstanding navigation aids. They are not replacements for looking outside the boat. Many accidents occur because operators spend too much time looking down at a display rather than through the windshield. Electronic charts can lag slightly behind your actual position. GPS accuracy has limits. Chart databases can contain errors. Floating debris will never appear on your screen. Neither will sandbars, partially submerged objects, or wildlife. Your eyes remain your most important navigation tool.

Fatigue Is Often Overlooked

Many serious boating accidents happen late in the day. After spending eight or ten hours in the sun, operators become tired without realizing how much their alertness has declined. Sun exposure, dehydration, vibration, heat, and constant wave action all contribute to mental fatigue. Reaction times slow. Attention drifts. Decision-making suffers.If you're tired enough that maintaining continuous attention becomes difficult, it's time to slow down, rotate operators if possible, or head back to the dock.

Every Passenger Depends on the Operator

Passengers place tremendous trust in whoever is at the helm. After all, the “Captain”/Operator is responsible for everyone’s safety. Children, friends, and family members assume the operator is making safe decisions.That responsibility cannot be overstated.

Unlike passengers in automobiles, many boat passengers are not restrained by seat belts. Even moderate impacts can throw occupants overboard or violently against consoles, seats, rails, or other passengers. This is one reason properly fitted life jackets are so important—especially for children. While investigators have not yet released all details regarding the New Jersey accidents, both tragedies remind us how quickly lives can change when a collision occurs.

What Can Every Boater Learn?

Regardless of what investigators ultimately conclude, these accidents reinforce several timeless boating safety principles.
Slow down after sunset. There is rarely a good reason to operate at high speed in darkness.
Maintain a dedicated lookout. If passengers are available, ask one person to assist by continuously watching ahead and identifying hazards.
Keep your eyes outside the boat. Use electronics to confirm what you already see—not as your primary source of awareness.
Avoid unnecessary distractions. Silence notifications, put the phone away, and resist the temptation to adjust electronics while underway.
Wear life jackets. Every boating accident is different, but remaining afloat dramatically improves survival after an unexpected ejection.
Know your route before departure. Study charts before leaving the dock so you spend less time looking at electronics while underway. However, your previous track markings can be helpful to ensure you’re traveling in an area that you’ve previously traveled.

Boating Safety Is About Learning Before It Happens to You

Every investigation provides an opportunity to ask: "What decision can I make differently?"

The two heartbreaking New Jersey tragedies should remind every recreational boater that fixed objects do not suddenly appear in front of a vessel. Instead, collisions often result from a chain of small decisions—speed, distraction, fatigue, reduced visibility, complacency, or delayed recognition—that eventually leave the operator with too little time to avoid disaster.

We owe it to those who lost their lives to learn from these events. The next time you're returning to the marina after sunset, ask yourself one simple question: Am I operating at a speed that allows me to avoid the next channel marker before I reach it? That single decision may prevent the next tragedy.
